Something Worse

Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you." - John 5:14

Contemplate what “nothing worse” means in your own life. Some of us have been through terrible things, things that are so bad it seems like there couldn’t be anything worse. When Jesus spoke to the healed cripple as recorded in John 5:14, I think what he may have been addressing a specific sin that this man was involved in. The physical healings that Jesus did point to the complete healing we will have someday when we join him in heaven. The “nothing worse” could be a reference to complete separation from God. Hell. Through Christ, our sins are washed away if we confess them. If we do, he is faithful and just and will forgive them. But if we continue to go down paths that draw us away from a relationship with Jesus, whatever happens in this life is nothing compared to eternity apart from him.
